Maintaining good oral hygiene is the cornerstone of a healthy smile. Proper brushing and flossing habits play a crucial role in preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Here’s a quick guide to help you brush and floss effectively

The Do’s of Brushing

  • Brush Twice Daily: Brush your teeth at least twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed.
  • Use the Right Technique: Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, flick your toothbrush downwards for your upper teeth and flick your tooth brush upwards for your lower teeth away from the gum line  and for children and young adults  gentle, circular motions can also work
  • Choose the Right Tools: Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Consider an electric toothbrush for enhanced cleaning. Electric tooth brush would do better cleaning than manual and choose pressure sensitive types , eg . Philips Sonicare
  • Replace Your Toothbrush: Change your toothbrush every 3-4 months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  • Be Gentle: Use a light touch while brushing to avoid damaging your gums or enamel.

What is dental Floss ?

Dental floss is a thin, soft thread made of nylon or Teflon, designed to clean between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach. It helps to remove food particles and plaque from areas prone to decay and gum disease. When you brush twice a day, you should floss at least once daily. Flossing your teeth is as important as brushing.

The Don’ts of Brushing and Flossing:

  • Don’t Rush: Spend at least two minutes brushing to ensure you clean all surfaces of your teeth.
  • Don’t Use Excessive Force: Scrubbing too hard can lead to enamel erosion and gum recession.
  • Don’t Skip Flossing: Ignoring flossing can lead to plaque buildup and gum problems.
  •  Don’t Use a Worn-Out Toothbrush: Old, frayed bristles are less effective and can harm your gums
  • Don’t Forget to Rinse: Rinse your mouth thoroughly after brushing and flossing to remove debris.
  • Don’t Brush Immediately After Acidic Foods: Wait 30 minutes after consuming acidic foods or drinks to avoid damaging softened enamel.

By following these simple do’s and don’ts, you can ensure your brushing and flossing routine which keeps your teeth and gums healthy for years to come. Remember, consistency is key, and regular 6 monthly visits to your dentist will help maintain optimal oral health.
